This is a decent first effort by a new mystery author. The book begins with an incident which grabs the reader's attention, and then seeks to solve "what happened". I liked the different spin with the chemistry angle. The main character was somewhat sparsely developed, but after other incidents were revealed, I believe that was purposely done.Future readers should note that this book contains homosexual male interactions, which though tastefully done, might offend some readers. All in all, I look forward to seeing what this author has to offer in future novels.

I really enjoyed it, and can't wait for the next installment. The characters were likable (well the ones who deserved it). Emory was quirky and funny, and Jeff was a likeable PITA (getting into trouble, butting in where he shouldn't). I like that the mystery was well developed, with some twists and turns, and the ending had me seriously creeped out. As others have stated, there is a story arc that is left VERY mysterious and I am sure we will see it play out in future books. Just enough of it to whet your appetite, but you don't feel cheated since the book ends on a "light" cliffhanger. The main mystery is solved - but you are left wanting more on what is going to happen to our main characters. Some of the procedures surrounding the case were a little weird, odd things that I can not imagine a police officer/agent would do in a million years, but honestly the story flowed very well, was entertaining and intriguing and I am happy to overlook little inconsistencies when everything else is so enjoyable.Definitely on my "pre-order" list when I see the next book is coming out.

I really like murder mysteries and I enjoyed this book. Wilson knows how to move a story along and keep the reader interested. I don't know how many times I thought I knew who the killer was and then in the next chapter I was proven wrong or something else happened that made me suspect someone else. I started out not caring much for the main characters and by mid-book, enjoyed their interaction.

I really liked this story from a new author for me. I am looking forward to the next book. I hope he fleshes out the characters more as he continues with this series. I don't think that you will be disappointed with this book, that is unless you love stories that are 90% sex and 10% plot. You won't find that here, but you will find a well written book. I would recommend it if you are looking for a good read.

The actual mystery and story line in the book was rather well done. However, it was totally ruined for me by all the gratuitous graphic sex scenes. I have no respect for an author who can't write a decent story without feeling the need to "pad" it with sex. I would life to preface my following comments with the statement that I don't care if it's heterosexual or homosexual sex. I'm simply not interested in reading any of it. At this point in my life "been there, done that" makes having to read about sex an unwelcome distraction when I'm looking for a good story.I would like to point out that I'm a heterosexual old lady who has been married to a wonderful husband for 48 years. However, we have a gay cousin and he and his partner of 24 years are two of the most fun people we know. Also, we have a lesbian couple in our lives and I consider those ladies two of my closest friends. Together for 45 years, we have many times stayed many nights at their home when we are in their state, and they come and stay in ours. I could care less that any of these people are gay. However, I would like to illustrate how stupid this entire story was: The two leading men are on an investigation, and through the course of it they realize they are attracted to each other. At one point in the story they are in a house and it explodes. They make it outside, and the one investigator tells the other one to quickly get his burning clothes off. When a house explodes, you don't descend into stupid sexual banter. Here's is a reprint of what I'm talking about:Emory looked at Jeff and yelled, "Take off your clothes!" Jeff pulled off his shirt and kicked off his shoes with as much force as he could. He pushed his pants down and tried to get them from around his ankles, but he lost his balance. He fell backwards onto Emory, whose back hit the snowy ground. Jeff turned his body around to straddle Emory, planting a hand on the ground beside each of his shoulders.... As Jeff yelled in his face, Emory smiled. "Don't smile. I'm mad at you." Emory raised his hands to the sides off Jef's cold and goosebumpy torso. As the PI faced him again, Emory's gaze traveled from his blue boxer shorts to his six-pack and striated chest before locking on his green eyes. "You are just stunning."..... Emory locked his arms across Jeff's bare back and kissed him."Seriously? After they just escaped from a house that exploded and is now a fiery inferno? Wouldn't matter to me if it were a heterosexual couple. This kind of behavior after a house exploding simply wouldn't happen. Shock would set in. Fear, etc.. Not a need for sexual contact. This kind of iodocy left me with no respect for the story, and no respect for the author. If you can't write a story without useless, extraneous sex thrown in to lenghthen the story, then you're not much of an author.I recently finished another book about two friends who were in Special Forces. there wasn't a single bit of sex thrown into that book, and I couldn't put it down. Why? Because the author could write a compelling story, from start to finish, without needing filler. If you enjoy your books with sex scenes, you'll like this book. If you are a discriminating reader who is more interested in a compelling story-line and an author who can hold your attention without silly sex scenes, you'll hate it. I hated it.

My take on Murder on the Lake of Fire by Mikel J. WilsonAll my friends and colleagues know that I just - well - don't really like to read however....Doors, chemistry and purple water….. Murder on the Lake of Fire is book 1 of the Mourning Dove Mysteries and I can’t wait for the next one. It’s hard to get me hooked on reading a book. I need to get drawn in right away, I need to “know” the characters and the environment quickly to stay interested – needless to say I was hooked in the beginning. Great development of characters with real struggles and desires, lots of twists and turns only to end with the ultimate turn… Wow!I must admit - the whole "door" thing is awesome.... hehe - read it you'll see :)Well written Mikel – will be waiting for the next one (can we fast track it???) !!!
