I have read over a dozen books regarding "the spark that lit the powder keg." Hidden History stands apart. Regarding the German war guilt myth, the authors stand on the shoulders of the great WW1 revisionist historians such as Barnes, Fay, Cochran, and Martin. Where HH really stands out, however, is its placement of the facts in the greater context provided by Carrol Quigley's astounding revelations (Tragedy and Hope and The Anglo-American Establishment) regarding an ultra-wealthy group of highly influential men who secretly hold the levers of world power.I believe HH gets as close to how the events actually took place as any attempt to date. The ultimate result is history freed from its shackles - regarding WW1 (and the Boer Wars) at least.I highly recommend this book for those who can handle learning Kaiser Wilhelm II was the victim of a diabolicly evil conspiracy led by British (and later, American) elites dealing with willing Russian, French and Belgian co-conspirators. When it comes to conspiracies, there are theories and then there are those proven with facts. As the elites systematically destroyed countless records, the authors were forced, at times, to use circumstantial evidence. As for circumstantial evidence, if it's good enough to convict in criminal court, it's good enough for revising history. (Especially so, when the primary sources were intentionally destroyed by the guilty actors.)The authors did a masterful job at placing the events in full context showing the what, why, and how.I have purchased multiple hard copies of this book to give to friends. Even if one cannot accept that unelected men met in secret to plot the war, HH establishes that the version taught for the last century is nothing more than dressed up war propaganda.(The authors follow up book - referenced in HH as upcoming - will be released in Nov 2017 under the title "Prolonging the Agony." It is listed for pre-order on Amazon. Per the description, the book will detail the vicious Entente propaganda, the prolonging of the war, and the backroom dealing that led to US entry.)

If you are seeking a credible explanation for the events leading up to WWI, then you absolutely must read this book. Previous histories regarding the origins of WWI are not lacking in detail, but none of those histories provide a satisfactory answer as to the “why” of WWI. And, in my opinion, “Hidden History” (“HH” for short) is the one book which does (by putting together a cohesive story line gleaned from hundreds of sources). For me, “HH” is the gold-standard for revisionist history, WWI or otherwise. In “HH” the authors describe how a select elite of British power mongers worked together (in the period from 1891 to 1914), and behind the scenes, in order to advance their agenda of establishing Britain as the predominant world power (“Rule Britannia”), and how their machinations ultimately brought about WWI. Basically, this “Secret Elite” (the authors’ term) proceeded from the assumption that what was good for the British Empire was good for the world, that a rising Germany (circa 1905) was a perceived threat to their agenda, and thus Germany must be brought down (all of which ultimately resulted in WWI).(As a brief aside, I think the authors of “HH” have misidentified the true culprits – rather than Milner and the other British “Empirists” using the Rothschild banking empire (and others) to advance the agenda of the “Secret Elite”, it was the other way around – the Rothschild’s used the Secret Elite to advance the Rothschild agenda of world dominance via banking – as the authors themselves have pretty much conclusively proven (see esp. Chapter 17). As much as I dislike Robert Woodward, his quote from the “Deep Throat” source to “follow the money” makes sense. Financiers do not back ideology because they agree with it, but rather because it will make them more money. So the Rothschilds backed the “Secret Elite” for this very reason – i.e., to make more money.)This book is not a wild and disjointed “conspiracy theory rant”, but is rather a well researched and connected narrative which tends to prove the allegations. The authors provide abundant evidence to show that there was, indeed, a select group who wielded influence behind the scenes, and who conspired to bring about a war with Germany. Specifically, in arguing their case, the authors provide: a whopping 1473 footnotes; 44 “Newspaper and Magazine” resources referenced; 26 “Published Articles and Pamphlets” referenced; and 337 resources listed in the “Select Bibliography”. This abundance of cited resources lends a high degree of credibility to the authors’ allegations. (I ended up ordering several of the referenced books so that I can verify the authors’ allegations.) The authors’ allegations are the only explanation which seems to make any real sense. Historiography should make sense – any account which doesn’t comport to common sense should be subject to question. Consider this when comparing “HH” (2013) with two other recent contemporaneous “histories” of the origins of WWI: (i) “War That Ended Peace” (by Margaret MacMillan, 2013); and (ii) “Sleepwalkers” (by Christopher Clark, 2012). Both seem to take the approach that the war was inevitable - pretty much like a locomotive with the engineer dead, but still gripping the "dead-man switch", such that the train just went off the tracks, with no one to blame. Then compare these recent “histories” to “HH”, which extensively documents a narrative which actually makes sense – i.e., places specific blame on specific individuals, and having specific motivations. In comparing “HH” to “War that Ended Peace”, both are equally well annotated, but only “HH” actually makes sense. (No real surprise that both MacMillan and Clark give England a pass on causing the war, given their respective academic affiliations – Oxford and Cambridge.)Wars don’t just happen of their own accord – they are driven by the motivations of persons in positions of power, and particularly by those who stand to gain by war. To that end, the motivations for the national war mongers leading to WWI were as follows: (i) on the part of Britain, to put down a rising Germany (as a threat to a rising British Empire); (ii) on the part of France, to reclaim the Alsace-Lorraine regions lost to Germany in the Franco-Prussian war of 1871; and (iii) on the part of Russia, to gain control of Constantinople, and thus a gateway to a warm-water port. But perhaps the biggest war monger was the Rothschilds, in order to make money. Make no mistake – France and Russia were merely dupes to facilitate the British (and more specifically, the Secret Elite) agenda of putting down a rising Germany (which was a threat to the goal of a predominant British Empire). Neither France nor Russia were in ascendency at that time (1914), and thus were the perfect partners to help Britain foment, and fight, a war against Germany (a war which the Secret Elite knew they could not bring about without causing friction between Germany and her neighboring European powers). But who stood to gain regardless of which side won the war? The Rothschild banking empire! They financed virtually all of the arms manufacturers on both sides (see Ch. 9), and many of the belligerents (France, Britain and Russia). While the Rothschilds stood to gain more by ensuring that Germany lost the war, they stood to gain in any event (regardless of who won or lost the war). And they certainly stood to gain even more by ensuring that the war was prolonged. (See again Ch. 9.) [See also newly added last paragraph to this review, added 7/17/18.]For me this book was a slow-read – not because of the style of writing (which is excellent), but rather because of the abundance of new information which is packed into a relatively short 360 pages. The more I read, the slower I read – the authors dig the reader deeper and deeper into the account of how the “Secret Elite” (and the Rothschilds) acted to bring about a war with Germany. It almost made me nauseous to see how the world was duped into war in 1914, and continues to be duped about the truth well over 100 years later.“HH” is not perfect - there are (infrequent) instances where the authors allege certain conspiratorial activities without providing citations to support the allegations (e.g., how the “Secret Elite” acted to get Poincare (and no one else) into the position of PM of France in 1912). While a further criticism might be that the authors minimize activities on the part of the Germans and the Austro-Hungarians, I do not consider this to be a deficiency in the narrative – those parties were merely reacting to power-plays made by the true aggressors (Britain, France and Russia). The authors also contend, somewhat credibly, that the “Secret Elite” acted to alter the historical record in order to hide their activities (see “Conclusion”, pp 348-361). Certainly “official records” are always suspect when trying to discern what really happened, as the government officials who created those records will always try to paint their actions in a light most favorable to them, and to their governments. Even diaries are subject to painting an incorrect but favorable picture, and/or being edited prior to publication. Alteration (and misrepresentation) of the historical record is a part of history itself. While we will never know the full and true “history” of the events that lead to WWI (too many missing and altered documents), we can at least seek out those accounts which are authoritative and which make the most common sense. “HH” is one such account.I understand that the authors have written a book entitled “Prolonging the Agony” (to be published circa Dec., 2017) which addresses how the Secret Elite acted in the period 1914-1918 in order to prolong the war in hopes of ultimately defeating Germany (versus accepting the “status quo” peace offer of Germany in 1916, in order to end the war). I have no doubt that the Rothschild banking empire had an interest in prolonging the first world war – more sales of armaments, and more loans to governments, all financed by the Rothschilds. And bringing the U.S. into the conflict merely expanded the source of wealth which could be extracted from the public (by the bankers) in order to finance a prolonged war (as well as providing a fresh supply of cannon fodder for the battlefield). The authors are obviously on to something which actually comports with historical facts (circa 1889 to 1914) in showing how a circle of British elite (likely under the control of international banking interests) manipulated British foreign policy (and public opinion) for the ostensible aggrandizement of the British Empire, all to the ultimate result of (at least) WWI. Stay tuned for hopeful future revelations by these authors. I would very much love to see the authors continue their research via a third volume into the influence of the “Secret Elite” in drawing Europe (and the U.S.) into WWII. I have long studied the casus belli of WWII, to no real satisfaction. I suspect that the post-WWI legatees of the “Secret Elite” continued their efforts in order bring about the ultimate destruction of Germany via WWII. (Consider merely the irrational March 1939 “Guarantee” by Britain to Poland (as backed by France) – why would they do this? As I see it, the March 1939 “guarantee” by Britain to Poland was nothing more than a replay of the 1914 “guarantee” by Britain to Belgium. Both instances of “British Guarantees” (i.e., in 1914 and in 1939) were nothing more than mere pretexts by Britain in order to bring about a war against the perceived rising German economic threat to the British Empire.)Additional comments as of 7/17/18: Actually, the American side of WWI was financed by the J.P. Morgan bank, but JPM was essentially the U.S. agent for Rothschild (as is easily verified by an internet search). In an odd coincidence, I recently read "The Creature from Jekyll Island" about the creation of the U.S. Federal Reserve bank [U.S. "central Bank"] circa 1913. JPM is one of the main banks in this system. As per "Creature", the purpose of a "central bank" is to create money for the government to spend. One of the primary government expenditures is for war. "Creature" thus ties in nicely with "Hidden History" in supporting my suspicion that the PRIMARY driver of WWI was not British imperialism, but rather banker profits, and in particular, Rothschild profits. (See esp. Ch. 11 of "Creature".)

The history we know is a lie by omission. Prof. Carol Quigley is the original source of this investigation and as a History major with graduation with distinction this clearly connects all the dots. It should be mandatory reading for every citizen on the planet as God only knows what the future will be if the sociopaths who have been running the planet for the past hundred years continue with their endless war agenda. Highly recommended .. nah essential reading for any who have an interest in the planet we bequeath our children.

This is a pretty interesting book that will fill out your understanding of the previous WW1 period and the actual causes of international rivalries and tensions that led Europe to pour a century of growth and development into the mud and lay the cost of putting things back together on the next century. .and counting. I like the bullet points that highlight each chapters main points and the story told is very interesting and backed up by copious cited references. It's truly sad that a century after the war we are repeating so many of the same steps that led us to disaster and are too busy playing Facebook to read a book like this and see why. That said while ample reputable authorities also attest to the existence of the group refereed to as "the secret elite" to simplify the maze of names and titles that they used I think the authors lay a little too much on their agency rather then simple geopolitics and economics... still one of the best histories you will find right now
