Her dedication to civil rights and a just America should inspire and challenge us all." - Carolyn Cerbin, Senior News Editor/USA TODAY NETWORK NATIONAL NEWS DESK"The intriguing life story of this former conservative, gun-shooting product of the segregated South represents the coalition of decency that is trying to transform America into a more just society. We can't go there!" Friends ever since, I am thrilled to see Jocie replete with humorous and inspiring stories capturing her role in the great struggles for social justice." -- Al Vorspan, Senior Vice President Emeritus, Union for Reform Judaism "Jocie is a lovely, thoughtful account of a different time when many of us were searching and of the journey that allowed some of us risk-takers to survive in wonderful and unexpected ways. About the Author
Jocelyn Dan Wurzburg grew up in Memphis going to Vollentine, Snowden, Central, then Rhodes College where she received her B.A. in Sociology/Anthropology; J.D. from University of Memphis. A fifth generation Memphian, married with three children, she thought her life was set - until the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King in 1968 shattered her belief system. That was a transformative event that raised her consciousness to racism and its role in society. She founded the local Panel of American Women that year to address prejudice and celebrate differences. She started the Concerned Women of Memphis and Shelby County, credited with averting a second sanitation workers' strike a year after Dr. King's death. Jocelyn jumped into civil rights, women's rights, and social justice activities serving on the Social Action Commission of Reform Judaism. President Gerald Ford appointed her to the International Women's Year Commission, and she served Governor Winfield Dunn on the Tennessee Human Rights Commission, where she wrote Tennessee's first anti-discrimination law in employment, public accommodations, and housing. At age 35, Jocie went to law school hoping to be more effective in her "causes." After four divorce trials, she pursued mediation as a saner process, becoming Memphis' first professional mediator. She founded the Mediation Association of Tennessee despite resistance to mediation by the bench and bar. She helped start the Association for Women Attorneys and chaired the Family Law and the ADR sections of the Memphis Bar Association. Devoted to jazz, she founded the Jazz Society of Memphis, feeling music could bring people together.

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Jocie in person. Her book perfectly reflects her personality. Growing up in the South, I loved reading about events and history of the time and how Jocie was involved. Beautifully written. Great story. Would love hear more about Jocie’s adventures.
If you care about civil rights for everyone, you’ll love this memoir by Jocie, a brilliant, fascinating, funny, “southern Jewish American princess,†fearless civil rights activist, and pioneer in mediation. Reading Jocie’s book is like sitting down with your favorite story teller, hanging on her every word, and realizing how much courage and chutzpah it took for her to fight discrimination locally, statewide, nationally, and internationally. A typical southern Jewish housewife and mother until the day the Reverend Martin Luther King was killed in Memphis, his death, the plight of the sanitation workers he was trying to help, and the evil of racism and discrimination set her on a lifelong path to help ensure justice, racial equality, women’s rights, gay rights, and human rights. Never preachy, often funny, never self-serving, she clearly delights in sharing what she’s learned and how she learned it. She also briefly shares some of her personal life, including the losses, the discrimination she sometimes faced as a Jewish student when discrimination against Jews was part of the Memphis social scene, and the banjo player who brought love and laughter to her life. I loved this book.
I truly enjoyed this book. It documents important moments in the history of civil rights, and the life of someone who has been at the forefront of social change. The book's humor lightens the sadder moments of the author’s life, and her pioneer spirit and can-do attitude and make the more glorified stories no less compelling. I believe the author meant for this to be a story of how so many people have influenced her, but I read a story of a woman’s life infused with meaning that radiates outward.

I've been searching for a resource to help digital magazine publishers get started for years, and I've been surprised to find out that no such book existed until now. Lorraine Phillips' book has everything you need to know to begin the journey to digital magazine publishing. I especially like the downloads from the website for the book. There's a start up budget sheet that almost perfectly spells out all of the things new publishers must consider to fund their new business. This is not necessarily a step by step guide that tells you exactly what to do to start a digital magazine, but the research Phillips put into this book will save new publishers a lot of time during the business plan writing/set up process. There are lists of free and paid sources for stock photos, examples of rate cards, lists of free software that will help with monitoring social media, and much more. I recommend also getting her other book on magazine publishing, Publish Your First Magazine: A Practical Guide For Wannabe Publishers, since it covers other topics that are critical to running a magazine that are not covered in this book, such as examples of press releases and branding tips. Overall, I'm extremely thankful for this book and I'm sure that it will garner plenty of dog ears, wear, and tear as I get closer to the launch of my magazine!
This book is very informative. It explains everything you need to think about when creating a magazine. Lorraine also gives some great resource information, whether you are planning a digital or print magazine. It will be one of my go to reference while I am going through this process .
Lorraine Phillips did an amazing job writing this book for new digital magazine publishers!! The author provided very detailed information and easy steps to publish a digital magazine. Her knowledge of the industry helped me tremendously and I feel very confident in publishing a successful magazine!
I bought Lorraine Phillips first book Publish Your First Magazine: A Practical Guide for Wannabe Publishers. It was most useful but since my magazine is totally digital/online, I decided to add this book to the first. Truly, this book will take you from concept to delivery. All you have to do after reading it is to implement. Think of it as a resource that keeps on giving as you'll find yourself coming back to it often.
very helpful
