As I write this review, I take a deep breath because this book has taken my breath away. I was on an emotional journey from beginning to end. For me, this journey was filled with laughter, intrigue, mystery, sorrow, love, hope and admiration. I did not want this journey to end. I felt I was at the edge of my seat the entire time.Bhrodi de Shera and Penelope de Wolfe were such amazing characters. Bhrodi de Shera - A royal Welsh Warlord, a king in his own right and a man who loves his country. A man who also suffers internally and must overcome his own personal turmoil. They call him the Serpent, and rightly so, because his strike is deadly as sin. Can the Serpent change the future? Penelope de Wolfe - She who has so much of her mother and father in her, is not liking what she must do. What she must do is her duty...while preserving her families honor and not damaging their legacy along the way. She is a knight and the daughter of the legendary English knight, Sir William de Wolfe. Can she act accordingly? This author is very descriptive, so much so, that I could really "feel" the mystique that surrounds this story. I must confess, there was a moment where I had to put this book down because I needed to cry and it was so heartfelt. I cried off and on throughout. I can sincerely say, with as many books as I read, there have been less than a handful of stories that ever made me feel this way. This is very rare for me. This is a true testament to this author's gift. This is why I can sincerely recommend The Serpent to you. The Serpent will be on my list of all time favorite books for years to come. Kathryn Le Veque can make you feel and she is brilliant. If you have read The Wolfe, you will be thrilled with "The Wolfe gang" along for this fantastic journey.

Liked switching between present and medieval times. Also a surprise helping to keep King Edward I from Rhydilian castle. Penelope de Wolfe has been told she must marry the Welsh king to insure peace between Wales and England. She is not happy so she has locked her father & brothers in a room. Penny has had a rather unconventional upbringing. She is the youngest daughter of all William & Jordon Scott Dr Wolfe. So she is a "daddy's girl" and raised as a warrior instead of a lady (which I find sort of unusual). Bhrodi de Shera is King of Angelesly Wales and he also is not fond of marriage. Story is of Penny & Bhrodi finding love. Also the political turmoil of the time which is historical accurate. I didn't really feel anything for her; she was hateful to William her father when he logically tried to save her and her husband. I feel she was totally insensitive to what he was willing to do for her by risking his lifetime of accomplishment. William should've blistered her bottom as a child; she was a brat. Story was great though. Diamondgirl

7/21/2015 - Okay. I gave a negative review of Kathryn Le Veque's book, "The Wolfe," in spite of the fact that I loved the character of the Wolfe, Sir William de Wolfe. However, this sequel was absolutely delightful! I felt it was well written with good character & story development. In this book, the character of Penelope, the heroine, is reasonably well developed. I was disappointed with this character in the beginning but she turned out to be a very strong female after all. Refreshingly delightful. She starts out as a knight under her precious father's tutelage (the Wolfe). I liked that idea. I like the way that was developed and was believable. However, she soon turns into this wishy-washy female (and I do think that the wife/woman of the house -- castle, here, are under valued roles and extremely important). She's just wimpy about learning this role instead of tackling it head on like a knight would do. Then, just as I have decided that I don't like her, she becomes the knight again and shows guts and strength of character! I love the way the sauropod was woven into this story! I really loved the character of Bhrodi de Shera, the Serpent although I would have loved this character to have been developed more as he came across as somewhat one dimensional at times. Penelope outshines him in my opinion. This book was more action than romance but had just enough romance for me. I am hoping that this love story will continue in another book as it did need further development. Bringing characters into this from The Wolfe was wonderful and gave the feeling of a family reunion. Jordan, Penelope's mother, was a much stronger character in this book than in "The Wolfe." Love this mother! Of course, the Wolfe was wonderful as always. Great papa! In this book, there is familial love, new romantic love, violence during war, and a monster! So many positives about this book! What a package! There is one sex scene in this book. Penny & Bhrodi's wedding night is described for us, since, of course, we could not figure out what was going to happen (dripping with sarcasm, here). Apparently, this is for all those young teenagers reading these novels so they can run out and practice this BEFORE they are emotionally or financially equipped to deal with the consequences & responsibilities of such sex! No oral or violent sex, thank God! I am so tired of that! Otherwise, I love this book but I would NOT allow my teenage daughter to read it. (Like I can really prevent such in this these days.) If not for the sex scene, I would have given this book 5 stars and would have recommended it for readers of any age.
